The Archives of the Riigikogu keeps the documents resulting from the activities of the Plenary Assembly, Committees, Factions and the Board of the Riigikogu. The Archives also stores the documents of the Chancellery of the Riigikogu, the National Electoral Committee and the Political Parties Financing Surveillance Committee. The Archives is open to the public.
The documents of the Riigikogu are archived by the compositions of the Riigikogu. The documents stored in the Archives of the Riigikogu start from the 8th Riigikogu (1995–1999). The archives of the legislative and representative bodies of Estonia from 1917–1995 have been transferred to the National Archives.
The archival documents of archival value are handed over to the public archives 20 years after their creation. Under the Archives Act of 1 January 2012, the archival documents are handed over to the National Archives 10 years after their creation.
The procedure for keeping the archives is approved by the Board of the Riigikogu.
Sittings of the Riigikogu have been recorded in VHS format since the opening sitting of the 9th Riigikogu. The recordings of the 9th–12th Riigikogus (1999–2012) have been transferred to the Film Archive of the National Archives. The Archives of the Riigikogu stores video recordings that date from spring 2007 onwards.
The archived documents can be consulted on the spot or asked to be copied. Documents can also be scanned and sent by e-mail.
