The head of the Estonian delegation Eerik-Niiles Kross declared that the delegation would focus on the key topic of today – offering comprehensive support to the Ukrainian people who are fighting for their own and for Europe’s freedom.
“The topic of Ukraine will come up in several important debates. This includes the continued debate on the establishment of an international special tribunal to prosecute the perpetrators of Russia’s crime of aggression. It is important for us to gauge the general attitude among the European parliamentarians in the issue of supporting Ukraine. I am happy conclude that there is no need for concern and that the support to and solidarity with Ukraine is not showing any signs of waning, despite what we might have feared in the spring,” Kross said.
On Wednesday, Kross is presenting a report on the situation of democracy in Hungary to the Assembly. The report invites the Assembly to keep a closer eye on the developments around democratic institutions and the functioning of the rule of law in Hungary.
Today, the Assembly will discuss the military confrontation between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Tomorrow’s discussion will focus on giving the West Balkan countries a European Union accession perspective.
On Thursday, the Assembly will addressed via video by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The address will be followed by a debate, during which member of the Estonian delegation Maria Jufereva-Skuratovski will speak on the political consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
The Nordic and Baltic delegations (NB8) have also scheduled a meeting this week.
The Riigikogu is represented at the PACE Autumn Session in Strasbourg by the head of the delegation Eerik-Niiles Kross and members Maria Jufereva-Skuratovski, Urmas Reitelmann, and Indrek Saar.
