The Riigikogu passed with 46 votes in favour by secret ballot the Resolution on the appointment to office of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Eesti Pank (415 OE), submitted by the President of the Republic. According to the Resolution, Mart Laar was appointed the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Eesti Pank. The President has noted in the explanatory memorandum that Mart Laar who has been the Prime Minister twice and who was one of the authors of the economic reforms that laid the foundation for Estonia’s success is a steadfast and strong-willed person and, with his extensive knowledge and leading experience, he is the right person to work as the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Estonian central bank now that Estonia is part of the eurozone. 34 members of the Riigikogu voted against the Resolution and 4 members abstained. The authority of the new Chairman of the Supervisory Board will commence with entry into force of this Resolution on 13 June this year.
