Foreign Affairs Committee discussed the situation in Georgia
The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu together with Margus Kolga, the Director General of the 1st Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Toomas Tirs, Desk Officer of the 1st Division of the 3rd Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, analysed today the situation in Georgia and the potential developments in the state.
The Foreign Affairs Committee considered it important that the emergency situation in Georgia be terminated at the earliest opportunity and that the normal way of life be restored in the state. At the present moment, it is also important to ensure a constructive dialogue between the coalition and the opposition.
The members of the Foreign Affairs Committee welcomed the forthcoming presidential election on 5 January 2008 and emphasised that the election should be carried out in a democratic and transparent manner as is suited for a state based on the rule of law, in the presence of representatives of international organisations as observers of the election.
The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Sven Mikser underlined that Estonia continues to support Georgia in the implementation of the democratic reforms which have been launched. Georgia remains an important partner in foreign policy and a target country of development co-operation for Estonia.
