Bill on Amendments to Citizenship Act was rejected at first reading
On the motion of the Constitutional Committee as the leading committee, the Bill on Amendments to § 5 of the Citizenship Act (306 SE), initiated by the Estonian Centre Party Faction, was rejected at the first reading with 46 votes in favour. 25 members of the Riigikogu voted against the rejection, nobody abstained. Thus, the Bill was withdrawn from the legislative proceeding. According to the amendment, children whose parents have unspecified citizenship and reside in Estonia on the basis of a residence permit of a long-term resident would also have acquired the Estonian citizenship by birth.
