Pentus and Mihkelson met Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania
At the meeting of Vice-President of the Riigikogu Keit Pentus and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Audronius Ažubalis, good mutual relations of the parliaments of the two countries were acknowledged with satisfaction.
Pentus stressed at the meeting that, in mutual cooperation, attention has to be kept focused on the Baltic Sea Strategy and equal treatment of all market participants in the European Union. Ažubalis gave a brief overview of the political and economic situation in Lithuania and he noted that the major problem in the state is the high unemployment rate which is going to be restrained in the near future. In Pentus’s words, it is the goal of the activities of the Estonian parliament and Government to look for solutions for reducing unemployment. Creation of a favourable investment environment is seen as a solution and one means for that is adoption of the euro.
Chairman of the European Union Affairs Committee Marko Mihkelson stressed at the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania that an important goal for Estonia this year is to adopt the single currency, the euro. As another important goal, Mihkelson mentioned the aspiration to become the home country of the European IT-agency. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania promised all-round support to Estonia in applying for that. Problems relating to the establishment of the foreign service of the European Union, mutual support of candidates at international organisations, relations with Russia and Eastern Partnership were also discussed at the meeting.
At the meeting, overlapping of views in the issues that had been discussed was stated with pleasure and it was found that close many-sided cooperation has to be continued between the Governments as well as parliament committees.
