Riigikogu

At today’s plenary sitting of the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia), Prime Minister Kaja Kallas will give an overview of the activities of the Government in implementing the European Union policy. Chair of the European Union Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu Raivo Tamm will also deliver a report. His speech will focus on the challenges and necessary actions in improving the current security, energy and economic situation.

It will be the last European Union policy discussion of this composition of the Riigikogu, and it will sum up the work that has been done. Due to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the debate will focus mainly on Ukraine and the challenges arising from the aggression.

Speaking of the security situation, Raivo Tamm says that the European Union is unanimous in its support to Ukraine, but financial aid has been given on an ad hoc basis and it is necessary to ensure the predictability and regularity of the financial aid at the first opportunity. He underlines that the EU has to support Ukraine in its accession to the Union and increasing contributions would have to be made into the reconstruction of Ukraine.

The Chair of the EU Affairs Committee will also speak about energy. In his opinion, Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and cutting of gas supply to several countries have accelerated the rise of energy prices. Tamm notes that the EU Member States have taken several joint steps to reduce dependency on Russia’s energy carriers and to mitigate the energy crisis that has emerged.

The sitting begins at 10 a.m., and will be streamed live on the Riigikogu website and Facebook page.

The video recording of the sitting can be viewed on the Riigikogu YouTube channel.
(Please note that the recording will be uploaded with a delay.)
