Today President of the Riigikogu Eiki Nestor made a statement regarding the tragic events in Brussels.

“This morning, the terrorists were again sowing death in Belgium. I express my condolences to the families and close ones of the victims, and wish for all the injured to get well soon.

With the explosions, the terrorists want to remake our European way of life and organisation of society in their image. I want to assure you: no explosion can shatter Europe’s belief in a free and democratic society. We cannot be changed into a Europe of fear, violence and lawlessness.

The police and security institutions are doing their work; the terrorists, their supporters and those who finance them will be brought to justice. Let us not add unproven doubts and prejudices to the evil of terrorism.

It is not reasonable and proper to collect political capital by taking advantage of terror. Estonia is a safe place thanks to unified Europe, not thanks to excluding itself from the contemporary world. All sensible people know that the latter just is not possible.

Today we are all Belgians,” Nestor said.
