Joint meeting of the Security and Defence Committee and the Health, Welfare and Family Committee of the Baltic Assembly (BA) that focuses on cross-border cooperation in disasters, crisis management and civil protection is held today at the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia).

Vice Chair of the BA Security and Defence Committee Urve Tiidus said that the meeting would discuss the annual assessment of the threats to the Baltic security, and cooperation in the case of disasters. “Floods, animal diseases, environmental pollution – these are just some of the disasters we have to know how to avoid, and naturally we have to be ready manage such situations, if necessary,” Tiidus emphasised. She added that in such situations, it was important for the Baltic States to cooperate mutually and with other countries.

Vice Chair of the BA Health, Welfare and Family Committee Helmen Kütt said that the meeting would also discuss civil protection in connection with crisis situations. “Emergencies are resolved more smoothly if the population is prepared for crisis, like a cyber attack or a natural disaster,” Kütt said. “At today’s meeting, we will also speak about the ability of the Baltic law enforcement authorities to cooperate operatively and the preparedness of health care institutions to work in emergencies.”

Urve Tiidus and Helmen Kütt together with their Latvian and Lithuanian colleagues will chair the meeting that begins at 9 a.m. in the Conference Hall of the Riigikogu. Member of the BA Security and Defence Committee Uno Kaskpeit, member of the BA Health, Welfare and Family Committee Monika Haukanõmm and Deputy Chair of the Estonian delegation Johannes Kert will also attend the meeting.
