The President of the Riigikogu Eiki Nestor met with US Senators John McCaini and John Hoeven. Their conversation focused on security issues in Europe, including energy security.

Senator McCain expressed a serious concern for Russia’s continuing aggression against Ukraine and the consequent increased security threat to the region. McCain reiterated the US commitment to its duties in the NATO and stressed the need to increase the presence and the visibility of the allied forces in the Baltic region, and to organise more joint training exercises.

Eiki Nestor acknowledged the resolutions in support of Ukraine issued by the US Congress, and the specific steps taken by the Senators in preventing the escalation of tensions.

“Ukraine, just like Moldova and Georgia, needs a clearer support for their reforms and social reorganisations from the democratic countries. These countries have expressed their wish to share our values. And this sharing is also a happy duty for us,” Nestor said.

The two sides also talked about the border agreement between Estonia and Russia which will be ratified in the Riigikogu this Wednesday.

Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marko Mihkelson, Chairman of the National Defence Committee Mati Raidma and MP Kadri Simson also took part in the meeting.
