Riigikogu

At the meeting of the President of the Riigikogu Eiki Nestor and the Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, the cooperation between Estonia and the United Kingdom in the European Union and NATO, and joint development assistance projects were discussed.

The Speakers also spoke about the security threats in Europe and Middle East and the situation in Ukraine. The possible holding of a referendum in the UK on EU membership was discussed too.

“At the moment the EU is not yet functioning in the way the majority of the citizens of the European Union would like to see and feel it. The governments of the Member States are obliged to carry out changes that answer the needs of today. In Estonia’s opinion, the result would be more effective if we could accomplish these changes together with our close partners and friends in the United Kingdom,” the President of the Riigikogu Eiki Nestor said.

The delegation of the Riigikogu also met with the Chairman of the House of Commons’ European Scrutiny Committee William Cash and member of the Defence Committee James Gray. They also had meetings with the analysts of international relations working in London and with the students of Richmond University.

The President of the Riigikogu is accompanied on the visit by Members of the Riigikogu Kadri Simson and Rannar Vassiljev.
