The National Defence Committee delegation who is continuing their working visit in Afghanistan met General Stanley A. McChrystal, Commander of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and U.S. Forces Afghanistan, in Kabul on Wednesday. The new strategy of Afghanistan, current developments and creation of the bases for transferring responsibility to the Afghanistan security forces were discussed at the meeting.

Among the needs of the nearest future, the General stressed the need to increase the contribution to the training of the Afghanistan security forces, in respect of instructors, mentors as well as teaching staff in different training centres and military schools.

General Stanley A. McChrystal highly appreciated the contribution of the Estonian Defence Forces to the ISAF mission. It is the more valuable as South-Afghanistan where our members of the Defence Forces are serving is going to be one of the major key points in the future developments.

“I was impressed by General Stanley A. McChrystal’s serious conviction that a breakthrough is achievable. And the approach in which development of local security forces and civil capabilities has been raised next to the military contribution by NATO with equal importance. This is the only possibility to ensure sustainability of our aspirations,” Chairman of the National Defence Committee Mati Raidma commented the meeting.
