The Chairman of the National Defence Committee Marko Mihkelson describes the report of the Information Board, published today, as a step towards strengthening Estonia’s security.
“The annual report of the Information Board on Estonia in the context of international security environment is a novel approach from our foreign intelligence agency,” Mihkelson said. He added that intelligence agencies around the world do indeed occasionally publish consolidated analyses of the major issues in their field.
Mihkelson emphasised that the analysis of the Information Board should be seen as part of the many activities aimed at strengthening Estonia’s security through national level decisions as well as international cooperation.
“An important task of foreign intelligence is to provide the political decision making level with information that would allow it to make informed decisions as well as strategic and tactical security choices,” Mihkelson said. In his opinion, the Board has performed very well over the years.
This is the first time that the Information Board publishes its security analysis; this has previously been shared only with state leaders. Nevertheless, the analysis is compiled for the benefit of the general public and does not reveal any state secrets.
