Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee meets with his Nordic and Baltic colleagues
The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Enn Eesmaa is participating at the video meeting of foreign affairs committees of the parliaments of the Nordic and Baltic cooperation format (NB8) today.
Eesmaa explained that the agenda of the meeting includes recent domestic developments in the conditions of the corona virus, transatlantic relations after the US presidential elections, and situation in Belarus.
“USA is an important ally both for Estonia and many other Nordic-Baltic cooperation format countries. This means that the US presidential elections are set to become one of the central topics of the meeting,” Eesmaa said. “We will definitely honour the choice of the American nation and hope to continue our excellent cooperation with our key ally,” he added.
The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee affirmed that the situation in Belarus was under close and constant observation. “We must not neglect the support we have pledged to the civil society in Belarus, emphasising the avoidance of violence and finding a peaceful political solution, which should culminate with new elections,” Eesmaa said. He added that regional cooperation is the key to supporting the people of Belarus, as unity gives more power to our voice.
The Nordic and Baltic chairmen of foreign affairs committees meet twice a year to discuss the current regional and international topics. This is the oldest regional meetings format of chairmen of foreign affairs committees.
NB8 is the Nordic-Baltic cooperation format that has been bringing Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania around the same table since 1992.
