Peeter Tali, the Chairman of the European Union Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu, said at the interparliamentary videoconference in the framework of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC) today that comprehensive support for Ukraine must be continued and increased

“Ukraine needs the launch of the European Union’s EUR 90 billion support loan, for which the European Council gave political approval in December 2025. The process of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union must also be continued as a matter of urgency,” Tali said.

Tali emphasised that pressure on Russia must be continued and increased. He recalled that last week the Riigikogu had ratified the convention establishing an international claims commission to assess the damages caused by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and to determine the compensation due. “I would encourage all parliaments to move forward with ratifying this convention as soon as possible.”

Tali also highlighted the need to adopt the European Union’s 20th sanctions package without delay. “It is also important to continue the policy of isolating Russia. We must find a Europe-wide solution to prevent citizens of the Russian Federation who have fought in the war of aggression against Ukraine from entering the European Union and the Schengen Area. It is a matter of our European security.”

Speaking of the situation in the Middle East, Tali said that the Iranian regime was one of the key players in a new axis of evil that challenged the entire free world. “The Iranian regime’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, its support for terrorist groups, its assistance to Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine, and its violent behaviour toward its own people pose a threat to regional and global security. Estonia supports steps to eliminate these threats and supports the freedom of the Iranian people to decide their own future.”

Tali pointed out that Estonia considered it critically important that the international community, including the European Union, achieved stability in the Middle East as quickly as possible. “Estonia supports measures to protect the region’s airspace, sea routes, and freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz as well as in international waters in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Oman, and the Persian Gulf. Estonia strongly condemns Iran’s attacks against countries in the region.”

The COSAC Plenary Meeting was to be held in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, but due to the situation in the Middle East, it was decided to conduct the meeting as a videoconference. Today’s videoconference focused on European security, with particular attention to developments in Ukraine, as well as the conflict in the Middle East and the activities of the European Union in the Mediterranean.

COSAC is a cooperation format that brings together the European Union Affairs Committees of the national parliaments of the 27 EU Member States.
