Member of the European Union Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) Riina Sikkut participates in the Conference on the Future of Europe, which is held in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, on 7–9 April. Chairman of the European Union Affairs Committee Siim Kallas and members of the Committee Oudekki Loone and Anti Poolamets are attending remotely.

Today, Riina Sikkut will take part in the meeting of the working group on digital transformation. Siim Kallas will participate remotely in the meeting of the working group on economy, Kerstin-Oudekki Loone in the working group on migration and Anti Poolamets in the working group on democracy. The purpose of the working groups is to prepare the final drafts of proposals based on the recommendations of the citizens. After that, the delegation of the Riigikogu will participate in the meeting of the group of national parliaments, where also the drafts of proposals will be discussed. The proposals of the working groups will be in the focus of the debates of the plenary sessions of the Conference tomorrow and the day after.

It is planned to submit the proposals that are based on the recommendations of citizens to the plenary session of the Conference on the Future of Europe held at the end of April. The final results of the Conference will be submitted to the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. After that, the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission will have to decide which steps to take to implement the proposals.

The Conference on the Future of Europe is a citizens-led series of debates and discussions that enable people from across Europe to share their ideas and help shape our common future. This takes place on a multilingual digital platform where every European citizen can share their ideas through national as well as European citizens’ panels. The conclusions of the discussions are explored at the Plenary Session of the Conference. The Conference as a public forum offers an opportunity to engage in an open, inclusive, and transparent discussion with the citizens on a variety of priorities and problems.
