President of the Riigikogu Ene Ergma met President of Macedonia Gjorge Ivanov at Toompea today.

Ivanov introduced the historical background of the region and ’s aspiration to accede to the European Union and to join NATO. The steps which Macedonia has already taken in the name of achieving the goal were also discussed.
Ergma stressed Estonia’s desire to continue good partnership relations with Macedonia and confirmed Estonia’s willingness to share its experience and to assist the state in every way in the implementation of the goals set. The President of the Riigikogu noted that Macedonia can gain useful experience in several important areas from Estonia. There is also room for development as regards tightening of the economic relations as well as cultural ties between the two states. The question of the name of the state of Macedonia was also discussed at the meeting. Ergma expressed her hope that the issue would find a positive solution as a result of the negotiations of Skopje and Athens.
Chairman of the Estonia–Macedonia parliamentary group of the Riigikogu Hannes Astok who participated in the meeting recognised Macedonia for its significant contribution to the missions in Afghanistan in which Estonia is also participating.
Member of the Riigikogu Mart Nutt also took part in the meeting.
