At the meeting of the President of the Riigikogu Ene Ergma and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Māris Riekstiņš, issues of the development of the cooperation of the two countries were discussed.

Ergma and Riekstiņš emphasised the current active and fruitful cooperation of the two neighbouring countries which needs to be continued and diversified both at regional and European Union level. Close mutual cooperation is a precondition that the voice of small countries could have a significant impact in European Union decision making. Cultural cooperation found a positive mentioning, an example of which is the granting of the Estonian-Latvian and Latvian-Estonian translation award in the course of this visit. The joint diplomatic cooperation at the level of embassies was also highlighted. The embassy in Kairo was pointed out as an example. However, in the development of this aspect, there are still more opportunities arising from common interests.

Ergma stressed that, in the development of the strength and welfare of Estonia and Latvia and of the whole European Union, it is important to contribute to innovation and research. “This helps keep the top level scientific potential of our countries at home,” noted Ergma. In her words, this approach will certainly ensure the economic success of the whole European Union because it is a contribution to the future.

Other issues relating to the European Union were discussed at the meeting, including the organisation of the foreign service of the European Union. The EU’s updated competitiveness strategy “Europe 2020” was also touched upon.

Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Sven Mikser and Chairman of the European Union Affairs Committee Marko Mihkelson also took part in the meeting.
