On Wednesday, 9 June, Chairman of the European Union Affairs Committee Marko Mihkelson and members of the Committee Jüri Tamm and Raivo Järvi met with Director General for European Affairs and Coordination with the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Xavier Demoulin in Brussels in order to learn about the priority issues of Belgian presidency that will start soon.

Xavier Demoulin asserted that, in spite of the internal situation of Belgium in connection with elections, it is prepared for presidency and the principles agreed upon with Spain and Hungary in the triple presidency programme will be observed. Main attention is paid to improvement of the economic and financial situation and economic management in general. There are also plans to implement the institutional changes of EU relating to the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty.
“Estonia supports all efforts related to strengthening and implementation of the European Union common market because that in its turn helps member states to overcome economic difficulties,” added Marko Mihkelson.
Xavier Demoulin recognised the practice of the European Union Affairs Committee to discuss with the institutions of the future EU presidency holder their activities of the coming half year.
