Chairs of the Baltic and Nordic foreign affairs committees meet in Copenhagen
Tomorrow, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) Marko Mihkelson will attend the meeting of the chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Baltic and Nordic parliaments, where the cooperation of the allies in NATO, defence cooperation after Brexit and relations with Russia are discussed.
Minister for Defence of Denmark Claus Hjort Frederiksen will give an overview of Denmark’s contribution to the work of the Alliance. Unification of the level of defence spending of the member states and closer defence cooperation in strengthening the security of the Baltic sea region will also be spoken about.
The discussions will focus on the foreign and security policy of the US, especially in regard to Russia, and participation of the United Kingdom in ensuring regional security after Brexit.
Mihkelson said that preserving transatlantic solidarity was important. He also thinks that countries which respect democratic values should fight together against the propaganda activities from Russia.
Mihkelson will tell his colleagues about the programme of interparliamentary conference for the Common Foreign and Security Policy which will be held in Tallinn in September within the framework of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of European Union.
Besides Estonia, the chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the parliaments of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden participate in the visit. Some of the NB8 countries are members of the European Union, some are members of NATO, and some belong to both organisations.
