President of the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) Lauri Hussar and President of the German Bundestag Julia Klöckner discussed the global security situation, economic environment and parliamentary cooperation at their meeting today.

According to Hussar, the visit of President of the Bundestag Klöckner is a strong sign of the close parliamentary ties between Estonia and Germany.

Hussar and Klöckner highlighted the importance of active parliamentary cooperation and expressed their wish to develop it further. Hussar recalled his successful visit to Berlin last November and the visit of the Defence Committee of the Bundestag to Estonia. A visit by the Bundestag’s Parliamentary Friendship Group for Relations with the Baltic States is planned for May. The Estonia-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group will visit Berlin in November.

Klöckner said that she appreciated the existing cooperation and emphasised the importance of continuing fruitful communication between parliamentary committees, which contributes to resolving issues of importance to both countries.

According to Hussar, economic and defence cooperation, as well as issues related to continued support for Ukraine, are important for relations between the two countries.

Klöckner expressed interest in the functioning of e-governance, where Estonia had been successful in her opinion. “In the field of digital cooperation, there are broad opportunities for cooperation to move forward with specific projects, including the promotion of artificial intelligence,” Hussar noted.

The President of the Riigikogu acknowledged Germany’s leading role in European security and its strong contribution to the defence of NATO’s Eastern Flank.

Hussar and Klöckner stated that, in order to resolve Europe’s security challenges, it was important to continue supporting Ukraine’s defence capabilities and economy, as well as to maintain and improve transatlantic relations.

Klöckner also met with Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu Marko Mihkelson and Chairman of the Estonia-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group Eerik-Niiles Kross.

President of the Bundestag also had a meeting with Prime Minister Kristen Michal on today. Tomorrow, on Thursday, she will go to the e-Estonia Briefing Centre, and visit the Memorial to the Victims of Communism at Maarjamäe together with Hussar.
