Riigikogu

The Board of the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) unambiguously condemns the violent incident that took place today during the demonstration at the Lossi Square at Toompea.

“Any kind of violence is unacceptable in a democratic society,” the Statement of the Board of the Riigikogu says. “Democracy means freedom of speech, and never violence. Persons who use violence in a democratic country humiliate Estonia.”

The Board of the Riigikogu believes that a common ground, which unites the society, can be found only through mutually respectful discussion. Even at the most critical moments in the history of Estonia, we have managed to avoid violence.

The Board of the Riigikogu emphasises that parliament is the place where different ideas are represented, and we have to be ready to listen not only the positions that correspond to our view of the world, but also other opinions.
