From today until Friday, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) Marko Mihkelson participates in a joint visit to Taiwan by parliamentarians from six Baltic Sea countries and Ukraine to discuss security situation and strengthen cooperation between democratic societies.

According to Mihkelson, the joint visit will give European parliamentarians an opportunity to gain insight into the regional security situation and discuss the changes in the global security environment in the context of growing geopolitical tensions. He said that Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, as well as relations with China and the United States, would be spoken about at the meetings. Future opportunities for cooperation between European countries and Taiwan will also be discussed.

During the visit, the international delegation will meet with Vice President of Taiwan Hsiao Bi-khim, Vice President of the Legislative Yuan (Parliament) Johnny C. Chiang, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-Lung and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs François Wu, Vice Minister for Policy at the Ministry of National Defence Hsu Szu-Chien, and Secretary General of the National Security Council Joseph Wu. The European parliamentarians will also have meetings with representatives of political parties, think tanks, and non-governmental organizations in Taipei. They will also visit Kinmen Islands.

The visiting delegation includes members of parliament from Estonia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden and Ukraine, who belong to United4Ukraine, a global parliamentary network created to support Ukraine.
