The North Atlantic Assembly was founded as a NATO body in 1955, and renamed NATO Parliamentary Assembly in 1998. The headquarters of NATO PA are located in Brussels, but twice a year, in spring and in autumn, Assembly sessions are held in member states. The sessions are attended by delegates from 28 member countries and 14 associate countries, observer states and international organisations, which brings together nearly 500 delegates.
The objectives and responsibilities of the NATO PA include protecting pluralist democracy and human rights, ensuring the security of the trans-Atlantic space, and combating international terrorism.
Estonia became associate member of the NAA in October 1991 in Madrid, and full member of the NATO on 29 March 2004. The delegation of the Riigikogu to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly is made up of three members and one substitute member. The delegation aims to protect Estonia’s interests in the field of foreign policy, to participate actively in PA events and work of the committees, to defend Estonia’s security policy positions and to fulfil Estonia’s duties in the NATO.
The current delegation was decided by the 10 May 2011 resolution of the Riigikogu and is made up of:

Chairman Marko Mihkelson

Members Sven Mikser and Mati Raidma

Substitute member Kadri Simson
