Today, an extraordinary session of the Riigikogu for election of the President of the Republic was held. The National Electoral Committee registered Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Indrek Tarand as candidates for President in the first round of voting. 101 members of the Riigikogu took part in the secret ballot. 73 Members of the Riigikogu voted for Toomas Hendrik Ilves and 25 Members of the Riigikogu voted for Indrek Tarand. One ballot paper was unmarked and two ballot papers were invalid. The National Electoral Committee considered Toomas Hendrik Ilves elected. Thus, the Riigikogu elected Toomas Hendrik Ilves the President of the Republic with 73 votes in favour.
