In accordance with the proposal of the President of the Republic, an extraordinary session of the Riigikogu was held today for the election of the President of the Republic.

 

The National Electoral Committee registered Ene Ergma as a presidential candidate in the first round of voting.

65 members of the Riigikogu took part in the voting. 65 members of the Riigikogu voted in favour of Ene Ergma. As the candidate for the President of the Republic did not receive the two-third majority of the Riigikogu (68 votes), the National Electoral Committee did not declare the candidate elected.

 

The extraordinary session of the Riigikogu will be continued on Tuesday, 29 August, at 12 a.m., when the second round of voting for the President of the Republic will be held.

At the beginning of the sitting the Riigikogu stood up in commemoration of the former colleague Robert Lepikson.

 

Member of the Riigikogu Georg Pelisaar took the oath of office.
