“A noticeable rise in military activities in Russia and the military aggression against Ukraine have thoroughly changed the security situation in Europe. Estonia in cooperation with its NATO partners must create efficient military capabilities at the Eastern border of NATO in order to ensure balanced security solutions and a sense of security,” said the President of the Riigikogu Eiki Nestor at his meeting with the President of the German Bundestag Norbert Lammert.

Estonian and German parliamentary leaders agreed that the decisions adopted at the upcoming NATO summit must include a specific and adequate action plan for assuring a good security situation in the region.

Discussing the situation in Ukraine, Nestor and Lammert emphasised the importance of democratic political parties for building up a free society and a rule of law. They also discussed the types of assistance that democratic states could provide to Ukraine in addition to sharing experiences of a more technical nature.

The leaders of the Estonian and the German parliament also talked about the future tightening of parliamentary cooperation between the two countries, which would include opportunities offered reciprocally to the students of the two countries to learn more about the work of the Riigikogu or the Bundestag.
