Riigikogu

President of the Riigikogu Ene Ergma met Chairman of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation Sergei Stepashin and the delegation accompanying him at Toompea today.

The meeting focused on development of Estonian-Russian cooperation in several important issues. In Stepashin’s opinion, the current cooperation between the Russian Accounts Chamber and the Estonian National Audit Office is efficient and effective. Ergma found that these good relations might serve as an example for organising the relations of the State Duma and the Riigikogu. Stepashin promised to take steps on his part to help overcome the standstill and put the relations of the legislators of the two states on a normal footing.

At the meeting, it was pointed out that the two states have effective and constructive relations in a number of issues. At the same time, it was found that there is still room for development in cooperation in economic relations as well as energy and environmental protection. Development of cross border cooperation and especially improvement of the organisation of work to resolve the problems with border crossing were considered important. Ergma stressed that the mutual relations of the two states should be based on a pragmatic approach in order to quickly and effectively solve the problems that emerge so that there would be a basis for future multi-faceted cooperation.

Stepashin is on a working visit in Estonia on the invitation of Auditor General Mihkel Oviir who also participated in the meeting in the Riigikogu. The guest will also meet the former Auditor General, the Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications Juhan Parts.
