Riigikogu elected Kersti Kaljulaid President of the Republic at an additional sitting. She received 81 votes at the secret ballot.

Election of the President in the Riigikogu on 3 October

98 members of the Riigikogu participated in the voting. 17 ballot papers were unmarked.

President of the Republic Kersti Kaljulaid thanked the Riigikogu for its trust and for the signatures and votes given to her. “Our cooperation will be friendly and good, I am fully convinced of that today. It is excellent capital that I will take with me to Kadriorg from here,” Kaljulaid said.

Electoral body on 24 September

First round of voting

In the first round of voting at the elections of President of the Republic, none of the candidates received the required majority of votes.

334 members of the electoral body took part in the voting. Candidate Allar Jõks received 83, Siim Kallas 81, Mailis Reps 79, Marina Kaljurand 75 and Mart Helme 16 votes.

Second round of voting

For the second round of voting, the names of the two candidates who received the greatest number of votes in the first round – Allar Jõks and Siim Kallas – were entered on the ballot paper. Neither of the candidates received the support of the majority of the members of the electoral body who participated in the voting.

Presidential candidate Siim Kallas received 138 votes and Allar Jõks 134 votes. 57 ballot papers were unmarked, and three ballot papers were invalid.

As none of the candidates received the required majority of votes, President of the Riigikogu Eiki Nestor convened an extraordinary sitting of the Riigikogu on 3 October at 1 p.m.

First round of voting

Of the three candidates for President, Eiki Nestor received the largest number of votes, 40 votes at the secret ballot. Mailis Reps received 26 and Allar Jõks 25 votes.

Eight ballot papers were unmarked. 99 members of the Riigikogu took part in the voting.

Second round of voting

At the secret ballot, Siim Kallas received 45 votes, Mailis Reps 32 votes and Allar Jõks 21 votes.

One ballot paper was unmarked. 99 members of the Riigikogu took part in the voting.

Third round of voting

In the third round of voting, Siim Kallas received 42 votes. 26 members of the Riigikogu supported Mailis Reps.

30  ballot papers were unmarked. 98 members of the Riigikogu participated in the voting.

As none of the candidates got the required two-thirds majority (68 votes), the President of the Riigikogu convened an electoral body for the election of the President of the Republic. By the resolution of the National Electoral Committee, Siim Kallas and Mailis Reps will be the candidates in the first round of voting in the electoral body.

Assumption of office

The President of the Republic will assume office on 10 October 2016.

The President assumes office by swearing the following oath of office to the people of Estonia before the Riigikogu:

“In assuming the office of President, I (given name and surname), solemnly swear to steadfastly defend the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of Estonia, to exercise the authority entrusted to me in a just and impartial manner, and to perform my duties faithfully, to the best of my abilities and to the best of my understanding, for the benefit of the people of Estonia and the Republic of Estonia.”
